There is fuck all that makes me cry
these days
I have hardened
like earth beneath a relentless summer
baked
and cracked
and dry
But today
the silence of the singing sands
is a report
shattering ear drums
and stopping traffic
It has made the war mongers pause
guns cocked but not firing
It has made the music fade away
into a drone of static
The children have jumped off
the swings
and gathered up their
mothers hands
standing beside them without a word
The mobile phones have stopped ringing
cars rolling to rest in empty streets
The sound of broken glass
is quiet
The lapping of waves
gone
For the singing sands are silent
and I cannot
cannot
recall their song.

omg! This is truly excellent!
I love the descriptions of everything stunned and still and silent. I could picture the scene clearly.
And the last lines:
The sound of broken glass
is quiet
The lapping of waves
gone
For the singing sands are silent
and I cannot
cannot
recall their song.
just awesome. Awesome finish. *claps*
Are the singing sands a natural phenomenon of some sort, or are they just a metaphor?
Tragically, a natural phenomenon which is being lost across the planet.
The particular qualities of the sands make them very prone to damage, and air pollution is ruining them,
and I find the thought that one day, the sands will not sing, to be very sad for the world
silly, I know.
it's so depressing hearing about all the things that are dying and damaged.
I confess I shut my ears a lot of the time. I just can't bear to think about it
Chris, this is a powerful, desperate write. One of your best I think.
I read this poem tonight:
http://bostonreview.net/BR27.2/armantrout1.html
It reminded me very much of one you wrote a long time ago. I'm not sure ... was it called 'I Stole a Moment'? Something about a moment anyway.
Its a good piece, but I don't recall writing anything much like it?
I'll check archives though
i almost every poem Ive written has the word moment in it though damn it lol
hmm, one of the lines, maybe the first line, was' I took a moment'
I thought I had this poem saved. In fact I'm sure I do, but I can't find it in my overstuffed folder, lol
